Matthew 6:4 “so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
We naturally care about what people see. We may want others to notice our kindness, appreciate our sacrifices, or recognize what we do for God. But Jesus reminds us that God sees what happens when nobody else sees. Our secret life includes the prayers nobody hears, the kindness nobody notices, the battles nobody knows about, and the choices we make when there is no audience. These moments may seem insignificant, but they reveal something important: who we are when we have nothing to gain from being seen.
Jesus teaches us that some of the most beautiful things we do may happen completely unnoticed. A prayer whispered alone, forgiving someone without telling others, helping someone without seeking credit, choosing purity when nobody would know, or giving generously without recognition, God sees all of it. This is where our relationship with God becomes genuine. Am I doing this because God sees me, or because I want people to see me?
There is also great comfort in knowing that God sees what others don't. Perhaps no one notices how tired you are, the sacrifices you make, the prayers you pray for your family, or the good you quietly do. God sees. Nothing done sincerely for Him is invisible to Him. So we don't have to advertise our goodness or chase recognition. We can quietly do what is right and leave the results and recognition with God.
Reflection:
Who am I when nobody is watching and am I living for God's eyes more than people's eyes?
Application:
Today, do one thing for someone that no one else needs to know about.
-
Give without being thanked.
-
Serve without being noticed.
-
Pray without telling anyone.
-
Forgive without announcing it.
-
Repent from a longtime struggle.
Then simply remember: “My Father sees.”
