Romans 12:2 “ Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
The world constantly presents its own patterns of what is valuable, acceptable, beautiful, successful, and desirable. But as people called to holiness, we cannot allow the world to become the standard by which we think and live.
The battle often begins in the mind. Our mind perceives what we see and hear, evaluates what enters our hearts, and influences the choices we make. What our heart desires must pass through the way we think. In this sense, our mind becomes a filter through which we process life.
If our thinking is shaped by the world, we will gradually begin to accept the world's values and patterns. But when our minds are continually renewed by the Word of God, we begin to see things differently. We learn to recognize what is pure, what is pleasing to God, and what does not belong in a holy life.
This is why Paul says, “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” God wants to change not only what we do, but the way we think. When God's Word shapes our thinking, our choices begin to reflect His truth, and our lives become a visible expression of the gospel.
A holy life therefore begins with a holy mind. What fills my mind will eventually influence my heart, and what fills my heart will eventually be seen in my life.
Reflection:
What is shaping my thinking most? Is it the patterns of the world or the Word of God?
Application:
Before accepting a thought, attitude, or value, pause and ask: “Does this agree with God's Word?” Allow Scripture to become the filter through which you think, discern, and live.
