Day 8 - Holy Listening

Audio

Mark 4:24 “ “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more”

Jesus teaches us not merely to hear, but to listen carefully. There are many voices around us, but not every voice deserves our trust. Sometimes the most dangerous voice is not an obviously wrong voice, it is the voice that tells us exactly what we want to hear.

Paul warned: “They will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” — 2 Timothy 4:3

Our hearts can have “itching ears”, the ears that look for words that comfort us without correcting us, approve us without challenging us, or justify what we have already decided. So when we hear something, we should ask: “Is this voice coming from God, or is it simply telling me what my itching ears want to hear?”

God's voice may comfort us, but it will also convict, correct, transform, and call us to obedience. His Word does not simply confirm what we want; it reveals what is true. Holy listening means being willing to say: “Lord, even if Your Word challenges me, I want to hear You. Even if it corrects me, I want to obey You.”

The question is not, _“Did I like what I heard?”_The deeper question is, “Did I hear what God was saying?” “What i Heard, is it taking me step closer to God?”

Reflection:

Am I seeking God's voice or simply looking for a voice that agrees with me?

Application:

Before accepting a message, advice, or even my own thoughts, pause and ask:

  • Is this consistent with God's Word?

  • Is this leading me toward obedience?

  • Or is it simply telling me what my itching ears want to hear?
