1 Corinthians 6:19–20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
Paul says that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. This means our bodies are not insignificant or something we can treat however we want. God has chosen to dwell in us. Our bodies matter to Him.
- 1. Protect What Belongs to God
Paul says, “You are not your own.” We live in a culture that often says, “My body, my choice; I can do whatever I want.” But for a Christian, the deeper truth is, “My body belongs to God.” So we should consider what we allow into our eyes, what we listen to, what we say with our mouths, where our hands go, where our feet take us, and how we care for our physical bodies.
- 2. Remember the Price
Paul gives the reason: “You were bought at a price.” Jesus paid for us with His life. Our bodies are not ours to use carelessly because we have been redeemed at an immeasurable cost. This should not make holiness feel like a burden. Instead, it should produce gratitude: “Jesus paid so much for me; I want my life to honor Him.”
- 3. Use Your Body for God's Glory
Protecting a holy body is not simply about avoiding wrong things. It is also about using your bodies for the right things. It means use your eyes to see people with compassion, your mouths to encourage, your hands to serve, your feet to go where God sends us, and your strength to do His work. The goal is not simply to keep ourselves away from sin, but to offer our whole selves to God.
Reflection:
What am I allowing into my life that does not honor the One who owns me?
Application:
Today, choose one area of your physical life whether eyes, words, habits, entertainment, relationships, rest, or health and ask: “Does this honor the Holy Spirit who lives in me?”
