Day 20 - Holy Temptation

Audio

1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

Temptation can make us feel as though we are facing something no one else understands. We may think, “My situation is different. My emotions are too strong. I have already gone too far.” But Paul begins with an encouraging truth: our temptations are human, not unique. Others have faced similar struggles, and by God's grace they have stood firm. We should not depend on our own strength but on Christ's strength when facing temptation. The word temptation means a test or a proving. The same situation can become either an opportunity to demonstrate faithfulness or an invitation to sin, depending on how we respond.

That gives temptation a different perspective. Every temptation is an opportunity to practice holiness. When anger rises, I can practice gentleness. When I want revenge, I can practice forgiveness. When I am tempted to compromise, I can practice integrity. When I feel the desire to be noticed, I can practice humility. And notice what Paul says about God's way of escape. It does not necessarily mean that God will remove the temptation immediately. The "way of escape" is more like an available exit route, a way through which we can endure without giving in. God provides the way, but we have to take it.

Sometimes the escape route is leaving the conversation. Sometimes it is putting down the phone. Sometimes it is refusing to reply while angry. Sometimes it is calling a trusted friend, opening God's Word, praying, or simply saying, “Lord, I need You right now.” The important question is not, “How close can I get to temptation without falling?” but “Where is the way out that God is giving me right now?”

Application:

When temptation comes today, don't spend too long negotiating with it. Look for the exit God has already provided and take it**.** Before the moment comes, identify one practical escape route for a temptation you regularly face.

Reflection:

When I am tempted, do I look for God's way out, or do I stay long enough to convince myself that I cannot resist?
